Welcome to Wigan Council

‘Forward thinking council, motivated colleagues, strong leadership, excellent rewards, fair pay and conditions and a flexible and creative approach to working life. Explore more about developing your career at Wigan Council.’
Wigan Council has a vision for Wigan Borough to be a confident place with confident people. We have made great progress for our council by continuing to improve outcomes for our residents.
Wigan Borough is the ninth largest metropolitan authority in the country and the second largest in Greater Manchester (GM) with a population of 320,000. Despite major deprivation challenges, Wigan Council has a track record for strong decisive leadership, high quality service performance, efficiency and innovative transformation and regeneration.
Since 2010, the council has saved over £100m through transformation and making difficult decisions, rather than cutting services. By 2019, the council needs to save another £60m. The Deal for Future aims to deliver these savings while securing growth and delivering reform over the next five years.
The Deal for the Future outlines the vision for Wigan Council over the next five years and includes a number of ambitious plans including the creation of 5,000 jobs, 5,000 new homes and multi-purpose community hubs where residents can access a range of services under one roof.
These proposals have been designed to reform services while stimulating economic growth - making sure that residents have access to quality and efficient services based in their local neighbourhood, while giving them the opportunity to live a long and prosperous life.
The council provides services across three large directorates:
  • People Directorate (Children, Adults and Families and Public Health)
  • Places Directorate (Economy, Skills and Environment)
  • Resources Directorate (Resources, Contracts and Customer Transformation).
We have an informal agreement with our employees called the staff deal.  It outlines what staff can expect from us and in return what we expect from them.
We also have BeWigan which is a celebration of how we do things here in the borough because it’s not just about what we achieve; it’s also about how we do it.  The three behaviours that underpin this are:
  • Be Positive
  • Be Accountable
  • Be Courageous
