Applying For A Job With Us

Information you may find useful when applying for a job with Tameside.

Filling in the application form

  • Each job has a job description and person specification which contains all the information you need to tell you more about the job. You should look carefully at these documents to decide if your skills, knowledge, experience and abilities match those needed to do the job.
  • We shortlist using the information provided on the application form. This means that you must provide evidence that you meet all the essential parts of the person specification and, as far as possible, all the desirable qualities that we need.
  • When filling in the application form include relevant experience or knowledge that you have gained through paid or unpaid work, in a hobby, at home or at school.
  • To enable our Equal Opportunities policy to run efficiently please complete the relevant sections in the form.
  • Please note that Tameside does not accept CV’s. If you have any difficulties completing the standard application form we will accept your application typed, recorded on an audio or video cassette or in Braille. If you use one of the alternatives please follow the format of the standard application form.

Note that we aim to communicate electronically with applicants when they have applied on-line. However, regardless of the method of application, if you have not heard from us within 4 weeks of the closing date of the job then please assume that unfortunately you have been unsuccessful.

Personal Details

To achieve equal opportunities in Tameside Council, we will detach the personal details from the application form before shortlisting . The Interview panel will not have this information until the interview, when we need it for administrative purposes.

Recruiting People with Disabilities

All applicants who have a disability and who meet the essential criteria for this position will be guaranteed an interview.  Read more information on Equal Opportunities.

Employment History

Please give details of your current and previous jobs in this section, with the most recent first. You may also wish to include any experience you have gained in doing unpaid or voluntary work.

Education and Training

If you come for an interview you will have to produce original documentary evidence of your qualifications. This includes your driving licence if this is a requirement of the job. We will not accept photocopies.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Make sure that in this section of the application form you clearly show how you meet the key areas of experience on the person specification. You may have gained the experience, skills and knowledge through work, home, voluntary work or other activities.

Pension Scheme

All successful applicants can join the Local Government Pension Scheme. The Council encourages all employees to join the Scheme.

In this section of the application form please give the names and addresses of two referees. One must be your current employer (or your last employer if you do not have a job)

Trade Union Membership

This Authority encourages Trade Union membership. The manager responsible for your employment can give you more information.

Canvassing of Elected Members of the Authority

Canvassing of elected members of the Authority in support of your application will disqualify you as a candidate.

Criminal Records Checks

If we offer you a job we classify as having access to children or vulnerable adults we will check your suitability with the Criminal Records Bureau. They use information held on the Police National Computer, lists maintained by Government Departments and information from individual Police forces. A criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining a job.

Prevention and Detection of Fraud

We must protect the public funds we handle so we may use the information you provide on your application form to prevent and detect fraud. We may also share this information, for the same purposes, with other organisations which handle public funds.

Tameside Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Good luck in your application.
